A common problem: students say they want to paint like Rembrandt, Odd Nerdrum, or Titian... But they're working with materials made for elementary school art class. If you actually want to work like a master, you need the right tools for the job. Working with improper materials will hold you back in more ways than you realize. Imagine trying to trim the grass on a golf course using only a pair ...

Excellent video Nic. You explain things for beginners very clearly if they do not know how to mix flesh color. I’m so used to popping into my flesh that I’m finding this a little challenging for me because I want to take out my Crimson or cad red deep. I know the program at the Met a few of us copied Herman Doomer and what was told to us by our teacher was to go to the archives to see what color is he really used. Interestingly, burnt and raw umber were on the list as well as lead yellow. My question is do you use Mars yellow? I find that to be close enough to lead tin yellow. And if you use it, when do you use it? I would assume it’s for jewelry and things like that. I tried getting the orange from using that with Vermillion except that it’s very opaque.

Hey Nic, I will be at Odd’s school in a couple of weeks for a couple of months. I’m at an advanced level and usually use 18 colors on my pallet and usually do not use black. I did start limited with 8 colors snd ivory black was the color we used. I’m going back to limited Notice it does simplify the thinking process for me. The colors I was given to bring is titanium white, yellow ochre, mars yellow, vermillion, mars black. Not loving mars black as its warm brown when mixed. I have never used mars yellow in flesh, i gets you can get more orange. What I’m having a problem with is trying to get the Vermillion to be more cool for the insides of the eyes, especially the Plica. even when I mix a little black into it, it becomes a rust color as opposed to using a Liz in. Any recommendations your videos are excellent I follow you on Instagram.😊

There's a Bruce Cockburn song, "Sahara Gold", pretty sexy song. One line: "Streets are full of life. Carnival faces in Rembrandt light. " I've seen Rembrandt paintings and understand the light. Interesting to have an insightful person share how he created the effect. Thanks

What I’ve observed is that “glowing” paintings have 3 key qualities: 1. Deliberate manipulation of values to create higher contrast near the focal point or origin of glow. 2. Blurred or hazy edges. The edges and lines surrounding the focus need to be broken up in order to create the sense that the light is emanating outwards from that object. 3. Intentional decrease in contrast and clarity in the surrounding areas to help emphasize the sense of glow at the focus.

Aka pay more attention to me instead lol. If you were actually any good you wouldn’t be trying to tell other people what they should think that’s some borderline fascist behavior. That being said I think modern art dumb and it was propped up by the CIA to mess with Russia which is hilarious.

Depending on mood of the light you can have cool or warm. Burnt umber warm or burnt umber cool different brands literally can look different of the same tone. Old holland has probably some of the most consistent pigments.

Anything of fine craftsmanship does not go unnoticed by those paying large sums for a work. Also remember there always thinking of there investment because the second sale or auction of the piece should bring more too them. All art has beauty in its own right the decision on the patron or investor too acquire a piece many factors play into this experience or temperament, mood, unexplainable feeling the list goes on thankfully.

3:47 seems to be the heart of this - what texture will you end up with. Currently engaged in a copy of a Goya portrait of which I have access to the original, and the smoothest of skin tones there resolve eventually into almost random strokes of abstract colour/texture. That which appears as delicately glazed skin is under a magnifying glass as rough as Rembrandt! You must never lose the abstract and randomness of the brushwork even if the scale is small - the paint dies on the canvas otherwise.

I have been reading a lot of Modern Art analysis about certain artworks and artists. It is utterly hilarious. The critics' rant is always way over the top and when you see the work they are praising... it is laughable. It would be a good video idea to first read the critical appraisals of these meaningless non-representative artworks, and then show the art afterwards. It would make for great comedy.

I don't know why I am watching this video lol. I am a science student with nothing I can use as as studio, I use GIMP because I can't afford photoshop or oil paints anymore, and I use my lamp and my bedroom mirror with myself as a reference hahaha. But all things considered, in spite of the learning curve, I don't mind the way my digital paintings are turning out.

Would you please do something about painting background foliage? For example the type seen in Hughes' Ophelia or any depiction of Eden or the Fall. There are so many videos on painting trees in the foreground but not so much as closer background stuff. I hope this is not too specific.

On the topic of beauty, old mate's terribly good-looking but his hair is letting him down. I mean I get it, my hair gets like that too when I'm painting. But he could look like Achilles if he'd brush it and trim the beard. This channel is super helpful for me and I'm going to subscribe. I aspire to paint like you do with the money and materials I have.

Prager (why is it pronounced like Präger?) has a strong political slant, so that would inform their opinion about art, a field that predominantly leans in the opposite direction to Prager. It's up to society (and the art industry) to determine what they perceive collectively as "good" art.

As much as I personally appretiate doing and viewing craftfully skilled figurative art, as an art history and philosophy graduate, this hating on «modern» art (anything after 1750-1800) is extremely dumb. Not only do modernist artworks hit people very hard, can be extremely beautiful, powerful and insightful, it’s also deeply reactionary and historically ignorant. Yes - lots of art is bad, boring and pretentious. Yes, capitalism corrupts some of the art world, but no, you don’t need to paint in one specific way, under one specific ideology, forever to create amazing and powerful artwork. Rid yourself of that idea and be free to make something we have never seen before.

I will never have any respect for any postmodern art, and the majority of modern art. I even find Picasso’s work revolting lol. I personally think it’s all just a reflection of society’s descent into subjectivism post-enlightenment. We no longer hold to traditional standards of beauty because we’re afraid to defend it, all thanks to this baseless presupposition that everything is beautiful in it’s own way.
